On Time, On Target, Never Quit

American maritime special operations have a long history, starting in colonial times with innovations like torpedo boats and miniature submarines. World War II saw the development of specialized units, including PT Boats and the OSS Maritime Unit. In the early 1960s, Boat Support Units and SEAL Teams emerged, forming the foundation of modern Naval Special Warfare.

These units conducted clandestine missions in Vietnam, supporting both coastal and riverine operations. In 1971, they became Coastal River Squadrons, and later, Special Boat Units (SBU) in 1978. SBUs participated in conflicts like Grenada and the Persian Gulf.

The mid-1990s saw the creation of Special Warfare Combat Crewmen (SWCC), with specialized training and a unique rating. SWCCs complete 36 weeks of grueling training with less than 25% earning the “Warboat”, their warfare designation insignia (similar to the SEAL Trident).

Today’s SWCCs are the premier special boat operators in the world, supporting SEALs across the globe in a wide range of operations. Their motto is “On Time, On Target, Never Quit”, a testament to their fortitude, professionalism and ability to increase combat lethality and survivability against peer and near peer competitors as well as other enemies around the world.
